The "X" button next to the dropdown arrow resets the field to the default selection.

My concern is that a user may hit the "X" when they intended to hit the arrow, accidentally clearing their selection.

Would it be better to remove the "X" and put the default selection at the top of the list?

The first issue is, which x does what?

You have two "x" icons which may do the same thing, but perhaps not. If they do the same thing - why do you have two? If they don't do the same thing - you're using the same icon to do two different things!

My concern is that a user may hit the "X" when they intended to hit the arrow, accidentally clearing their selection.

Yup. That's likely going to happen.

The notion that a dropdown box has revert to the default value is not a standard paradigm. The default value should be listed in the dropdown, so the user can also re-select if necessary.

Although it is common, having a "Select..." option (or similar) is not preferred. Your default value should be a real value. If the value is indeed a real value it should be placed in its proper place in the list order, not at the top for the sake of being "the default".

Maintaing a standard dropdown would be your best approach. Remove the "x" and simply select the default value, placing that value in the last as it should be based on the sorting order.

  • You've pretty much confirmed all of what I was thinking. I'm not exactly sure why the second "X" was added in, because it just closes the menu. It seems completely unnecessary.

  • @EvilClosetMonkey I'm just referring to your question of which X. It seems you are confused as to which X the OP is talking about. Without knowing the full UI, I'd thought wise to just focus on OP's core question. Commented Aug 11, 2014 at 19:59
  • @ChairmanMeow - nope, not confused. It's a metaphorical question. The "x" on the dropdown will be a problem. One of those reasons being that there is another "x" at the bottom of the dropdown. Potential confusion to user explained in paragraph 2. Commented Aug 11, 2014 at 20:06

Yes. I'd consider having a separate header bar for the X to close the window and / or moving the dropdown arrow closer to the labels

Putting the default at the top of the list does carry the risk that the user might miss seeing that there are values above the default.
