Apr 13, 2015 at 20:31 comment added Nicholas Pappas Another difference between this and my original wireframe was that "require" was a subset of the greater included set ("select from" and "require"). I've updated my question with my original discussion wireframes (they're wordy to clearly illustrate points). I think another hurdle I'm hitting is language -- especially "require", it just doesn't capture the end result well enough for me. I'm warming up to the simple list idea though, I had tried to overcomplicate it I think.

Apr 13, 2015 at 20:09 comment added tohster @EvilClosetMonkey this feels like a app where users will unfortunately need some appreciation for set logic no matter how simply the interface is presented. The design problem seems similar to many marketing analytics enterprise apps where designers have a hell of a time simplifying the interface because the root-cause is: marketing folks don't really understand analytical logic and no amount of UX simplification can eliminate that prerequisite skill.
Apr 13, 2015 at 20:06 comment added tohster hi @rewobs i'd be inclined to keep the tag colors the same because there are only 3 fields in this approach, and sematically a tag might appear in any of the fields so it can be disorienting to users to see mammals in green in one field, and then have it change color to red when she moves it to another field. But this isn't something i feel strongly about.
Apr 13, 2015 at 20:06 comment added Nicholas Pappas @rewobs - I think color would hinder. Color has meaning, even when we don't want it to. So a red require (for example) might imply "bad" to a particular user.
Apr 13, 2015 at 20:04 comment added Nicholas Pappas No nesting in this case (thank goodness). This isn't far from one of my wireframes. My hangup is the external memory load of all these groups, but I don't think it can be overcome as elegantly as I would like.
Apr 13, 2015 at 20:02 comment added Alejandro Veltri I've think about the same thing. Would you change colours of require tags (green) and exclude tags (red) to add scannability or you consider it counterproductive? PS: I'm glad you're participating in this community, the level of your answers is always really good!.
