Welcome to the site, @Stephen! Do you have any sources you can cite to support your assertions that Microsoft has made it established usage to use "press" and "key" or that Someone else somewhere has suggested "activate" . (Where is the usage established by Microsoft? For example, is there a style guide? Who suggested "activate"?)
