Jul 30, 2014 at 6:48 | comment | added | Graham Perrin | … this is my first question here, but far from my first experience with UX. The essence of the question is comprised in the first paragraph – so I could happily remove the background section (including the personal opinion subsection) but that might be misconstrued as overreaction to commentary; it's not. Most remarkable: there's not yet an answer from someone with knowledge of design principles for Gnome/Gnome Web, or from someone with more general knowledge of where I might find the reference material. So I might take this to chat, for more guidance on improvement, but no rush.
Jul 30, 2014 at 6:35 | comment | added | Graham Perrin | Without wishing to stir any undue emotion: @JD my instinct is to discourage voting for that reason. In Meta Stack Overflow there's an accepted answer to a question that might apply in other parts of Stack Exchange: When is it preferred to UP-vote a question? … also, in UX meta: Is the ratio of upvotes to downvotes acceptable/healthy? – nothing amongst the answers suggests that I might be treated unfairly in the UX area. Voting practice aside: refocusing on the title and content of my question …
Jul 29, 2014 at 21:54 | comment | added | Joshua Barron | Unhelpful critique? This question would probably get closed if it weren't mechanically impossible due to the bounty on it. I am not saying the question is not well written or that Graham's heart is in the wrong place, just that this question appears to be off topic as currently written.

Jul 29, 2014 at 19:02 | comment | added | Graham Perrin | Whilst I'm not averse to a change of title – to attract a broader audience – I'd like to avoid an over-focus on research … or authority. Perhaps the chat in IRC made reference to an archived e-mail list discussion (not necessarily in the epiphany or Gnome areas)? Perhaps the designers' own experience caused them to arrive at the current header bar design? And so on; I can only guess. Thanks again for commenting … maybe throw in (below) a suggested title or two, and I'll sleep on it, then build upon the suggested titles for a reword of the question.
Jul 29, 2014 at 18:49 | comment | added | Joshua Barron | If what you're really after is research about how usable different schemes for title/url display are, why not reword the question to be about that? Right now it's asking why a specific set of designers made a certain choice.
Jul 29, 2014 at 18:22 | comment | added | Graham Perrin | @JoshuaBarron thanks. I could have been more specific with the bounty … an authoritative answer would be great, but any answer other than my own will be appreciated. To a degree, I tried to avoid a leading question but here goes: I imagine that amongst the things that encouraged the developers to choose this design, there's research-based evidence to show that working without an immediately visible URL – and/or without a page title – can prove counter-productive. Maybe evidence to show how and why it's counterproductive? I guess, a UX expert will know of unbiased reference material.
Jul 29, 2014 at 17:21 | comment | added | Joshua Barron | This question is primarily opinion-based. Your answer is probably the best evidence anyone is ever going to get. And even with this information, what are you going to do with it? See ux.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask .
