If I decided to chose René's answer as the correct one is because he's more answering to the question "WHY I'm more tempted by the squares solution" (I had to explain my choice to make sure there is no ambiguity).

Jan 14, 2014 at 11:10 comment added JonW I'm not sure about this. Using colours implies that it is emptying rather than filling up (like a fuel gauge). Whereas in reality the actual meter here can only go up.
