May 8, 2018 at 7:46 | comment | added | Mark | "More than four and less than five" is exactly why a five-point scale, or a ten-point scale, is a problem: virtually all rankings will be in the 4-to-5 range, unless whatever it is is abysmal, in which case virtually all rankings will be in the 0-to-1 range. No matter how fine-grained or coarse-grained you make your rating system, the middle will be unused.

May 7, 2018 at 10:19 | comment | added | sampathsris | 5-star range is good, because when presented with a 10-star rating some (maybe most) users would rate between 5-10, (giving a rating of 5 for worst items).
May 6, 2018 at 14:44 | comment | added | miroxlav | @DominikOslizlo – thanks for commenting. I thought of the slider, too, but it looks like showing users two scales, one above other. This might look overly complicated. I think typical experience from present apps is that users click the stars directly. So clicking plus explicit Submit button can work better, I think. This is also how existing rating forms (in various app stores) work and users already know this. I updated the answer.

May 6, 2018 at 13:48 | comment | added | miroxlav | @DominikOslizlo – I was just thinking about exactly the same point and how to change this part of the answer
May 6, 2018 at 13:47 | comment | added | Dominik Oslizlo | Very nice one. Let's just remember that in the mobile first world and case here the hover might not be the best solution to go. We would need a touch-ready alternative.
