Oct 21, 2016 at 17:51 | comment | added | riddle_me_this | @AndrewMartin This would be a good idea for a smaller group - but for 1000 people, you may need to staff tables with people just to hand out the stickers, almost like at a networking conference. I've seen and taken exams with 2,000 people with your other idea of using a unique identifier with a lookup. It makes a lot of sense with those sizes.
Oct 21, 2016 at 14:10 | comment | added | Falco | @yo' But isn't formalism a big part of mathematics? Don't they lose points if they use the wrong mathematical symbol, nomenclature, or forget that addition is commutative? This is just another formalism they will have to learn or fail. Mathematics without some common ground and formalism is dommed to fail...
Oct 21, 2016 at 11:11 | comment | added | yo' | I don't have a low regard for the students, I speak of experience. I want --- as much as possible --- to evaluate their mathematical abilities, rather than their abilities to comply with rules that are all new to them (they've been to the university for 5 weeks only). Maybe it's a cultural thing that we prefer not to persecute them for technical mistakes.
Oct 21, 2016 at 11:06 | comment | added | Roux Martin | I assume there is some sort of roll-call for the exam - either at entry or before the start of the exam - students could collect their stickers then - In fact, there are plenty of way to manage the (very minor) problem of managing the students' relationship with the stickers that shouldn't require much thought.
Oct 21, 2016 at 10:38 | comment | added | Roux Martin | @yo' It seems like you have a very low regard for these students: They don't listen to instructions, they don't read instructions, they won't remember to bring a standardised form of identification... Why not add a persona to the question to help us understand the demographic you are targeting?
Oct 21, 2016 at 10:23 | comment | added | yo' | They wouldn't bring it to the exam and absence of the stickers would hardly be a legitimate (or even reasonable for this matter) reason for disqualifying the student. Look at it from the other perspective -- being kicked out of the university for a stupid sticker?
