Human Interface Guidelines (or short: HIG) refer to a written documentation that line out common elements for a user interface. These guidelines help develop a consistent interface and user experience across a team.

Human Interface Guidelines cover topics that affect usability, user interaction, visual elements and the look and feel of applications. They are usually documented in written form and often include examples of interfaces adhering to the standard, thus giving designers a chance to create products that will seemlessly fit into an existing framework or application ecosystem.

Publicly available examples of HIG's could be the iOS Human Interface Guidelines or the GNOME projects Human Interface Guidelines.
