I have a relatively large (>50 items) set of items from which the user needs to choose one. The items themselves are strings.

The two options I've considered so far are an AutoCompleteTextView and a Spinner. AutoCompleteTextView is what I'm leaning towards currently, but I feel it doesn't make it obvious that the user needs to choose one item from the list, as opposed to just typing in whatever they want. In a spinner it's obvious you have to choose one of the items, but for a large set of items you'd have to scroll through a lot and that is tedious.

Which one do you think is better, and is there perhaps a different alternative I have not considered? Ideally, I would like to have some kind of spinner but with a search like AutoCompleteTextView. That is, something with text input to narrow your choices, but you have to actually tap the item to select it. I have not found a pre-built component like this though.

When asking for which elements to use, rather show an image of the element, than its internal object name. Many UX designers don't use the programming names, and so your question becomes rather vague. – JohnGB Aug 22 '16 at 9:11
