This question already has an answer here:

Given that a large proportion of the world's people have probably never seen a "telephone" with a handset and coiled cord (and likely never will), why is that the icon that is still used? But then, what does a telephone look like these days, distinct from any other sort of handheld digital device? Maybe the idea of "telephone" is superannuated?

See this post: ux.stackexchange.com/questions/3117/… Your question is very similar (and probably a duplicate actually because the answers are likely to be exactly the same) – JonW Mar 23 '15 at 15:06
  • I guess what I am saying, is that maybe the "new" people using technology should create new icons that are meaningful to them, since they will have to live with them for a while. What does a "phone" look like to a 20 year old, and how does it look different from ... whatever? Maybe we should be iconifying the ACTION instead of the device or medium? But my favorite example is "toilet": it shows a male and female outline, not a commode! In no other case that I can recall are male and female icons used for anything. Strange. But, good! – user67695 Mar 23 '15 at 15:10
  • The trouble is that if you change to something contemporary people will not understand what it is. "How do I make a phonecall? I can't find the 'call' icon"? "It's that picture of a person with their hand to their ear". "Why is it not just the 'call' icon like everyone else uses"? – JonW Mar 23 '15 at 15:14
  • Thank you for the pointer to the GraphicDesign SE... I think that is where I needed to put this, but I didn't know it existed. Why does the Car icon not look like a buggy whip, and the airplane not a propeller? History? So, let's make icons look like the action: local travel, air travel... Then they do not become outdated. Until stepping disks arrive... But then the idea of a computing device will be long gone. – user67695 Mar 23 '15 at 15:18
