comment “Shaking” button leading to increase in conversion rate?
It could also be argued that the intention of this CTA is to "get started", thus not so different from the "start slide show" animation from SlideShare: wiki.darkpatterns.org/Home (I'm would still avoid it ;-) due to the reasons discussed in Johns answer).

@marcintreder, The shaking of your button is so subtle that I wouldn't call it "shaking". In fact, I find it more discrete than the OS X Dock Notification (those bouncing icons), so it might not be interpreted as intrusive, but "shaking stuff" is generally perceived as a dark pattern. Interesting A/B-test you're running, but I wouldn't put the credit on the "shaking" if this group gets a higher conversion rate... The CTA of your button(s) are very clear as is (imho).

Yeah. @Marjan is right. Attraction is only one side of the coin. It might attract attention, but that doesn't make it a good choice...

comment User testing for car interfaces
I really don't understand why you've got those downvotes? I suspect they find the DIY simulator to be too corny. The key point is in your last paragraph: Get the user distracted somehow. Let them play a chess game, give them several tasks simultaneously, let water drain into a glass and tell the user to keep an eye on the class so it doesn't overflow etc etc. If eye catching screen elements is the main issue with the test, then just let them have a quick look at product/prototype and see if they can manage to handle the product well enough.

@DvirAdler: The thing is that the mediator table is usually irrelevant for the end user. In the library example, you would either "select a book" and have a look at the history of this book (all the borrowers), or you would "select a borrower" and have a look at the history of his loans (all the books). Showing the mediator mediator table would be like a "log of transactions" where you dump out a list of "events" - i.e. a table with "Date|Borrower|Book". I'll see of I can come up with any example of this. :-)

@CaffGeek: Well, sometimes the users don't know what they want. You shouldn't exclude any options just because your users thinks it will be difficult (or whatever) to use. You could try, without being an arrogant besserwisser(!), to explain your experience with various solutions, provide some pros&cons with the various alternatives, and perhaps even run a few q&d tests to get some feedback or ideas (or some tangible "profs" about the best option). Having such an active and participative usergroup is a good thing. Use them!

Wouldn't we say that it's a kind of an UCD? (Not a part of)... It would be just the same as if you had defined your own UCD process where certain UX aspects were handled. That process would also be "an UCD approach", but the UCD documentation wouldn't necessarily need to know about (or refer to) your process.

@superduperfly could you add your references to KLM/GOMS/MPH and emphasize their relation to this topic?

@Vitaly, I've given my answer a second thought, and I rest my case ;-) The statement was silly and misleading, and it was not relevant for the question. The answer is updated...
