I do Technical Support for two businesses; a small ISP and a large University. On the side I run a Minecraft server, fiddle in various Linux distros, and program (mostly Ruby).

How to convey element dimensions to casual users? You could 'simplify' the design by having one representation of their choices, but center the active element in a cropping box. If they are manipulating the top border, then center (and highlight) the top border. That way you have one code path for modifying an arbitrarily complicated and large item. Scaling may also be appropriate if the cropping box is far smaller than the typical element being modified. |

Should I show the Bank name as a user enters a routing number? Do you know how often people typo when transcribing long undifferentiated numbers? It's something close to 1% on average. |

How should I design a “filter” screen where you can filter on many fields Do a product search on NewEgg; they have a comprehensive and powerful filtering system, with multiple 'levels' of complexity. |

What should the size of a game's window be? Full screen/maximized at launch. 9 times out of 10, users will play that game exclusively... other than very casual games like Mine Sweeper or Solitaire, games are almost always not multitasked. Players play the game and do nothing else until they are done. If you are aiming for a casual 'off to the side' game such as Solitaire your needs might be different. |

How to use many sliders with lengthy textual descriptions I would use more whitespace in your design, with larger up and down arrows; health sites in particular must cater to the elderly, which means larger and easier click targets. Perhaps side by side arrows rather than above and below? Otherwise I think this is a pretty good design, with valid supporting assertions. |

Best Way to Handle on Unknown Number of Tabs My recommendation would be to do a quick paper mock up and walk five users through interacting with the site. "Can you tell me what this button would do if you clicked it?", "What is this list of items at the top for?" and things like that. It will take you a few hours, but give you invaluable feedback about whether users will understand the site. Record it with a smartphone, capture a few choice quotes, and perhaps you can demonstrate to the Execs the merits of alternative designs. |
