Synonym for 'GUI' for non-technical people? It's not about separating the program from the GUI. For any program to be useful to humans it must have an interface; that interface may be graphical or it may not. |

Why do users click randomly and rapidly when an application hangs? I click in frustration as if to say, "Pay attention to me!" |

Synonym for 'GUI' for non-technical people? I would say "program" is the wrong word to choose. When I hear program I think of the code that is executing. In my experience, most people understand the words "app" and "interface". |

Is there an optimal font size / line height ratio? Agreed with @DA01. That is a far better answer than most posted here. |

Is there an optimal font size / line height ratio? I wouldn't take advice from the W3C on topics such as typography and graphic design. The answer to this question is far more nuanced than they let on. |

Is database too technical a term for user? +1 for focusing on the user's goal. Excellent answer. |

Computer login with password only, without username Bravo for attempting to rethink usernames and passwords. I think they are among the worst causes of bad UX. |

Should checkbox labels be to the right or the left? I would never put a lone check box without a label. If it needs to be a different control that has no label, then use a different control. |

Best way for selecting a time/time span on the web But they do figure out a lot of others like "tomorrow" and "the 30th". If you fix this one bug, this is among the best date pickers out there. |

Could scaring users be good UX? While this does address the question, I'm not a big fan of this example. A better solution for this scenario would be to implement undo. (Of course, you can't really undo a delete, so you simply mark things for deletion at a later date, and the undo unmarks them. Basically, the trash can metaphor.) |
