What tooltip text should I give to controls that move a map? Imo, tooltips should either appear always appear or never. I have not yet seen any application where the tooltips stop appearig after a while. |

Explaining “circular reference” to a non-technical end user That may be cool but gives the impression that the problem is isolated to 1 object, which is exactly not what a circular reference is in reality. |

Explaining “circular reference” to a non-technical end user I think this is the most valuavle answer I have seen here. Sometimes a picture tells more than a thousand words. |

Studies or experience on using faded text to indicate more content? Could you post an example of such toned text? Not only will this make it a lot more clear what you mean, but it will also give us the opportunity to conduct our own little study about it. |

Selecting items for different categories in a dropdown Altough that may be nice, showing an image of the device would not solve the problem in any way. |

Is 'crazy' good? This reminds me of a certain app that showed 2 buttons on the screen: Yes and No. Above these buttons a question is asked to the user: "Do you have a small penis?". When the user points the mouse cursor toward the "No" button, the button started moving so you where not able to click it. |

Is 'crazy' good? Crazy is good. If you have crazy users ;) I'd say thinking out of the box is certainly good, with the downside that it can lead to very bad solutions. |

Selecting items for different categories in a dropdown In your question you talk about a drop down box and about a device homepage. Is there something in between those two, like a search results page? |

How to best label age group boundaries? Your "best alternative option" is the only good solution imo. |

Is it better to 'XOR' or 'shade' text that is highlighted? Well, the second (XOR) is impossible to read. So that should answer your question. And to give you a lttle background: it exists because it is technically easy to program: it's just a matter of inverting every pixel. The first thing is harder as it requires to keep track of each pixel's original color. |
