is there a reason that you have to show 5 or less? why can't you just have the dropdown to show all the updates, and the unread ones are highlighted. Use infinite scroll.

are we talking about 5 updates in the dropdown? the dropdown is only for unread updates, there will only be 2 in the dropbox in your scenario.
