@JohnGB You're absolutely right. I figure though that since Wordpress fully switched to it and Google partially did, there might be something written about it.

I'd keep the address. It's much more likely that a person will mistype email address. Getting an "all is well" notification from the site would help someone make that mistake. Sometimes it can take up to 3-6 minutes for an email to be received legitimately, so a person might make the mistake and then sit around waiting for an email that never comes.

I like the progress bar idea. I've seen it done before and completely forgot about it. I also think you're right and am leaning away from locking them out at any point.

@JuanLanus That's a good point. I think something like an unclosable growl notification might help that. In case they lost the email, the notification can have a 'resend' link. Not letting users close the notice isn't too user-friendly, but since confirmation is mandatory, it would let them partially use the site and have a constant visible reminder to confirm.

@JuanLanus True, but that's a problem that exists with any form of email confirmation, regardless of whether they have to confirm immediately or within a certain time.

@Captain Good idea! I'll change it to just that. Thanks.

@Captain Because having to go to your email and confirm right after registration is something people usually have to do without having committed anything to the site. If right after registration they had an opportunity to make their profile, then I imagine confirmation might be viewed as more acceptable. It's similar to an eCommerce site letting you fill your shopping cart prior to registering an account - it lets you commit to the site, and then asks you to do something you don't like.
