Grammar Girl also notes that the CMOS "says Web addresses don't need special treatment... put the punctuation in just as you would if the sentence ended with a word or a number," which kind of implies we should include the period in the full sentence link if we go by the CMOS rule you in your original answer (link removed in subsequent edit). Regardless, I love the rest of your answer: "Rewrite using anchor text, and set off links." I think that's the true take-home for me, and ultimately neatly sweeps the whole issue under the table. Thanks for sharing all of this information!

You've almost convinced me, but I'm still not sure :) Grammar Girl leaves periods out at the end of her sentences on that page, but none of them are full sentence links. I wouldn't include the punctuation if it was just a phrase link either, but I'm still undecided about a full sentence links. Same thing goes with the Yahoo/Utah links: They seem to be talking about phrase links at the end of sentences, and not necessarily full sentence links.

Thanks for the response! That's interesting. What if we apply that same logic to my original question about whether the punctuation belongs inside the link tag? Do you that same Chicago Manual of Style rule applies?

Out of curiosity, in option 3, why do you feel the period after the word "understand" should be included in the italics tag?

Thanks for the response! I'm not a regular iTunes user, so I'm having trouble finding the advanced search that you mentioned. Can you point me in the right direction?

In the question's example, the link's text is not a URL; the link text is plain English language, e.g., "Watch the video here." There's no "youtube.com" URL to create multi-period confusion.
