I've found Stack Overflow really useful recently, so I'm trying to help.

Why don't we auto-save for users instead of having them save manually?
The contacts manager in Gmail has a save buttons, but additionally it saves when you move the focus to another field (and the "save" button turns to "saved"). Despite I'm not used (and usually quite worried) about auto-saving, in this way I get used after a few times that I notice that the save button "works" without any direct intervention. This is similar to the other placebo ideas above, but it makes the user to get used not using it.
