Synonym for 'GUI' for non-technical people? Most programs just have a checkbox for "advanced settings" in the settings menu, which defaults to off. |

How to make a progress-speed bar more understandable? @Virtlink: Well, the graph shows (MB/s) vs. MB. You're correct though that the derivative graph would have units 1/s, and would give, roughly, how (un)stable the transfer speed is at each point in the file. But, that's off-topic :) |

How to make a progress-speed bar more understandable? Not sure why this answer has so many upvotes, it's basically just repeating what was already said in the question, but with bold letters. |

How to make a progress-speed bar more understandable? +1 This is the correct answer, and may be what Microsoft is already doing. Has anyone tested to see? |

Can an OK button do nothing? When I do this, I always also leave an indication on the form as to why "ok" is disabled. Something along the lines of a red, bolded label just above the buttons saying "Please select an item or items to <verb>" |

Who needs an external on/off Wi-Fi button? I can't believe this answer has so many upvotes... I don't know of any security professional who would call this an important "security feature." The iPad, for example, does not have a switch for WiFi; but no reasonable security professional would call that a security bug. This answer is just plain wrong; the real reason is simply to make it easy for non-technical users to save battery life. |

Who needs an external on/off Wi-Fi button? +1 this is the real reason, as cited by every laptop manufacturer ever... The average user hates short battery life, but doesn't know how to or want to go messing around with things in the control panel. |

What reason could Nintendo have had for putting the A and B buttons the wrong way round? Weren't there arcade games that did this long before Nintendo? I assumed they were just following the times. |

What is the most user-friendly way to show position of a user on a long leaderboard? I like this better than the accepted answer, with the caveat that, if the player is #1, I don't think there's any need to duplicate his/her name. |

Are there numbers and letters to avoid for activation codes via SMS? I'd also add "UV" (which are easy to confuse when handwritten) and "9" (which can sometimes be confused for a lower-case g) |

Do we need good-looking design for a program internal only to our company? Er, no, they definitely did not do a good job. Every time I want to do something simple in Photoshop I've never done before, it takes me waaay more time than it should to figure out how. It once took me two hours to figure out how to edit a mask using the paintbrush (it is not stated anywhere at all in their help documents)! Whenever I try to do the same tasks in Paintshop Pro (which I've used less often than Photoshop), it's been without exception much easier to figure out. And 3DMax has an equally terrible UI (compare it to, say, Maya). |

Do we need good-looking design for a program internal only to our company? "is photoshop/3Dmax/etc.. good looking?" - No, but those programs are also much harder to learn and use than they could be (eg. Paint Shop Pro does most of the things Photoshop does, but is exponentially easier to learn/use). Using Photoshop wastes a lot of time unless you have every shortcut/menu-position memorized, so I avoid using it unless absolutely necessary. "XYZ large software doesn't care about good UI, so I shouldn't" is not a valid argument. |
