comment What percentage of Internet keyboard users are hunt-and-peck typers?
You ask a large enough group of people whether they look at a keyboard when they type or whether they can type without looking.

comment Replace polling with clever simulation
The user sends DTMF tones on their phone back to us with the code we show on the screen and we write to our database if the code is correct.

comment Generic/vague error messages to pass to spammy users?
Captchas are a terrible user experience and can be solved easily by farming to a third party like Mechanical Turk or low-wage workers in India.

comment Ideal number of data points per 100 pixels for a chart
Jon W: The sparklines shown there don't have the same problem I'm having of super jagged peaks and valleys.

comment Is 10 search results per page the best?
I would put response time #1. Google did a bunch of tests on this and found that users wanted more results, but were very dissatisfied with the slower load time. They tested it by delaying 10-results pages by 400 milliseconds and got the same dissatisfaction as by showing 30-50 results per page.

Twitter has a separate style for button clicked, with an inner drop shadow. Most sites do as well. I think you should have all three as well to give better feedback.

Have you ever tested the button on users?

comment Fastest way to choose 2 items from a list of 10
@Roger - Not really. The user has categories in mind and is picking the two or three most relevant from a list of ten which were automatically generated by a computer

comment Fastest way to choose 2 items from a list of 10
@Roger: No, the ten items are "suggested" categories for an ambiguous topic and the user has to pick the two or three best ones from the ten - they can't just choose at random.

Sorry Vitaly - I went to sleep just before you left your comment! They are completing the task multiple times a day, but not consecutively, and mostly using the mouse. A touch screen is an interesting suggestion however!!

Where did the military come up with those guidelines? How'd you know about that resource?

comment One scrollbar or two for content + sidebar?
The problem with fixed is if you have a header, as you scroll you'll have ~200px empty at the top of the sidebar, unless you add some Javascript, like Salon does with their sidebar ad
