Not a programmer by trade, but I've done (and do) quite a bit of it.

Why do users click randomly and rapidly when an application hangs? I personally do it more to express my anger at the machine. Sort of a "take this" action. I know this because my tapping on the spacebar isn't designed to be functional, it's designed to beat the crap out of the keyboard. |

Usability of multi-level tabs versus dropdown menu for navigation Good point on the mobile users. We're still discussing whether to go with a single responsive site or a separate desktop site and mobile site. |

Implement gamification on Time reporting to minimize late reports? +1 for the concept of redeemable points. That would be a great way to motivate low performers. Just getting on a leaderboard isn't going to get the bottom folks motivated to move to the top. |

Opening website external links in new window — published usability tests In our case we provide the files through a custom ASP.NET MVC action that sets the proper content-type so no, users don't end up with a blank browser window. |

Could scaring users be good UX? I would be one of the novice users that would click an obfuscated command under an "Expert" menu just to see what would happen. |

How can I guard against users accidentally sending emails without attachments? +1 - this may not be the easiest way to accomplish the objective, but it's definitely the coolest. |

User suggestions in electronic dictionary The nice thing about tracking which translation they use is that you can use that information as a sort of rating. If 75% of people translating "at home" select "a la maison" you would rank that one higher. That said, Google interface doesn't make it terribly obvious that there are other translation options to choose from. |
