Not a programmer by trade, but I've done (and do) quite a bit of it.

comment If text is editable, how important is to show it (appearance wise) inside a text box?
Just curious...why do you want to do this? It's a significant departure from convention.

I think it's sort of funny that the Web Style Guide's site is rather unstylish.

comment Security question & answer. What questions do you ask?
I really think this question should be posed on security SE. There are lots of people who contend that security questions amount to a backdoor for accounts. If you're designing something from scratch you're probably better off implementing two-factor authentication.

comment What is the best way to indicate read-only cells within a table?
I'd also have the font color be a lighter shade than enabled text. Some sort of gray.

comment How should I visually represent multiple three-state flags?
Why not simply hide the N/A flags? Rather than displaying the full list and figuring out how to indicate what matters, how about only making the displayed list include what matters and have functionality whereby people build the filter from available list items?

comment Why do users click randomly and rapidly when an application hangs?
I personally do it more to express my anger at the machine. Sort of a "take this" action. I know this because my tapping on the spacebar isn't designed to be functional, it's designed to beat the crap out of the keyboard.

Good point on the mobile users. We're still discussing whether to go with a single responsive site or a separate desktop site and mobile site.

comment Implement gamification on Time reporting to minimize late reports?
+1 for the concept of redeemable points. That would be a great way to motivate low performers. Just getting on a leaderboard isn't going to get the bottom folks motivated to move to the top.

In our case we provide the files through a custom ASP.NET MVC action that sets the proper content-type so no, users don't end up with a blank browser window.
