comment Are button wheels around cursors ineffective?
This wasn't exactly my idea (and this is closer to the question marked as a possible duplicate). Specifically, holding the mouse button is often a task which is hard to perform for some people, just like drag and drop (including “how do I cancel everything now that I started moving the cursor” issue.) Now, talking about the concrete examples of applications, take an e-mail client: such menu on a list of e-mails can contain actions such as open the e-mail (also performed through a click on it), forward, reply, mark as spam or create an associated task.

comment Assigning to multiple groups
About the intuitive aspect, I can barely understand what is happening in your second example, even after skimming the description. Maybe it's because of the usage of the very abstract terms of objects and containers, but mostly because the number of interdependent controls (five) the user has to manipulate at the same time. Even your first illustration has this drawback, and I can easily see myself adding object 2 to group 1 and only then notice that I wanted to add object 2 to group 6 instead.

comment What is the best way to improve the experience of a product with existing user base?
An interesting case is the choice of black and white icons in Visual Studio, as well as ALL CAPS in Visual Studio menu. Both changes were badly perceived by many users. Could you take the risk of being in a similar situation? How can you avoid this? If being in a similar situation, how would you react? What if you are convinced that your new design is better?

Make sure you also read this answer to a related question: your current question looks like you don't understand very well the implications of message boxes on user experience and their low value.
