I am a web developer based in London. I used to be a UX designer, but those days are long behind me.

comment Why does Skype's “x” button minimize the application instead of closing?
@AnkitSharma - firstly, the name - Sky Peer to Peer - is a clue, but secondly, take a look at this (zdnet.com/blog/networking/how-skype-does-and-doesnt-work/1051) article for a comprehensive (though somewhat alarmist) summary.

comment Colours to use in a fashion website
@StewartDean - could there be ways to achieve the three "benefits" of black and white schemes I mentioned without having to stick to monochrome, though?

@StewartDean - you are, of course, assuming that it's more valuable to communicate the identity of the site than immediately express its purpose. Depending on your objectives, though, that assumption might be incorrect.

@Elmar - that's impossible to say without knowing what content you're revealing on hover, what the use case is and what clues you've provided that the content exists. I fear you may be thinking the question is much simpler than it actually is.

@JohnGB - yes, but visual design questions can be answered in much the same way as UX questions - by considering a use case, a viewer and what the organisation hopes to communicate.

comment How should we prepare users for a site overhaul?
@georgiosd - updating the UI of the old application is probably just going to duplicate the work that you do (I assume you are swapping out frontend as well as backend), and isn't likely to do much good for users besides (they just have to reorient themselves several times, as their heuristics for acting on recognizable UI components will get trashed every few weeks). I would suggest providing users a preview of the new app in the form of mockups and images initially (or static prototypes if possible), and make sure the new version's splash page shows where old, common task have been moved.

comment What is the best way to request individual characters from a password?
This is a great design, because it allows users who memorise passwords as paths across the keyboard (e.g. 'Qwertyuiop') to execute the password action without having to work out which letter falls at which position.
