Adrian is passionate about building effective teams and great products. He co-founded Quietstars to help companies do that using Lean, Agile and UX practices.

You'll find him working with startup and product development teams — doing everything from coaching & teaching to hands on UX & dev work. With more than 15 years experience working with startups, established businesses and agencies Adrian is an active member of the Agile and Lean UX communities. He's also a mentor for Lean Startup Machine and speakup.io.

You'll often find him ranting in a corner of the bar about how agile, business and user experience folk need to play nice together. Be kind and buy him whisky.

comment How can I communicate the user, that the refresh button must be clicked to refresh the content?
Did you ask the test participants why they hesitated? I can think of several possible reasons (didn't recognise the icon's meaning, thought it refreshed the whole page and would lose their settings, etc.)?

comment What's the difference between “Discovery” and “Usability”?
Depends what you mean by "the same time". Generally the practices are one or the other. E.g. ethno-style interviews are pretty much all discovery - since you're not evaluating a product. Process wise you'd do both discovery & usability practices at the same time when you're in an environment of rapid exploration & testing. Finding new stuff out & testing whether what we found out is correct. That kind of setup is what you'll sometimes see in startups, agile & lean teams.

comment What to use for “other” or “unknown” gender?
Not everybody fits in M/F categories, and for those that do fit in those categories you don't have 100% data. That's the reality of the world we live in. What is the problem? ;-)

comment How many participants for an ethnographic field study?
This. In the academic literature this is often referred to as "saturation". Googling around that should get the OP some pointers.

comment Is creating a user persona for a personal project needed?
I'm in the 'proto-persona' = a fundamentally different thing from persona cap. Hence the 'proto" :-) Proto/ad-hoc persona are useful for initial alignment. But unless you ground them in actual research they can be positively dangerous in my experience.

comment Best way to create user personas?
Are you asking how to create persona [which is a question abot user research], or how to produce persona descriptions [the physical artefacts used to communicate the persona research]?

@DanielZahra - I think you can do both. You can make it obvious that it's an automated mail, but also have a human as the sender. For example I suspect that few subscribers think that I send our Agile & Lean UX newsletter by hand. The Mailchimp footer is probably a bit of a give away ;) But the email is "from" me and I read the replies. I'll clarify the answer.
