comment Can't get users to choose the language they speak on language learning site
Then you have 2 problems... The 'user preferrence' is not always a user preferrence, I suppose most users aren't even aware of that preferrence. And in some environments user can't change that either, so you'd have to cope with the language choice anyway, and additionally to the problem with guiding users to fix bad choice based on HTTP headers heuristics.

comment English: gender neutral strings for named people in programs?
@TV'sFrank in some languages gender-neutral pronouns are reserved for things, animals and children, and using them in direct communication is highly offensive

@PaddyLandau exactly, and such people would be a victims of such 'genial' home-made 'improvements'

comment False identification of gender on website registration
Show me an application able to distinguish between male and female voice. Most human fail doing it correctly, especially when the voice is deformed by recording (telephone speech etc).

Aside from other aspects, such as ethical, why on hell it's the gender that is so important for you not to be faked, and not the age, nationality, religion or place of living?

comment Do American users also confuse the day and the month in dates like 01/02/2013
No, I'd say almost everywhere outside USA people would be sure that the 01/02/2013 is 1st February, since middle indian format would seem so absurd to them that they wouldn't even think someone may use it. I have noticed that on some forums the posts are not sorted correctly by dates, and some posts are in future, but I haven't even thought that month could be written first! Imagine the time 44:12:21 and guess what time it is :D:D
