Is the user able to enter any arbitrary value for a percentage of completion on a checklist item? Or is it a set of values as well?

I was just about to post this. I've done this a bunch of times. When combined with the additonal styling and colors mentioned by @MattLavoie in his answer, and disabling the OK button until the checkbox is checked, it works really well.

this is with the caveat of course that some languages (and thus books in those languages) are read right to left. Even still, I believe the convention is solid enough that for 99% of cases left to right is the best answer.
