Started in web applications using a home brewed POJO MVC framework before there was such a thing, pointing to an Oracle db. Then got skilled at the front end with JavaScript, was doing synchronous and asynchronous calls before it was a four letter word.

Got sucked into a big bank, and they loved me for my build automation skills using Ant and my ability to master CVS. At the same time was a main java dev working on a large value transactional system and did a lot of stuff with PDF libraries for showing images and reports of scanned cheques.

Then moved out to the rockies and got stuck in a shop that only recently stopped using FrontPage! Now I'm the only dev here and slowly turning things around, from vb.net to c# and ASP.NET MVC framework. With luck we'll be running on Mono this time next year. Phew!

I'd just like to point out that not long after I asked this question OS X Lion came out with Duplicate and got rid of Save As, and then Mountain Lion came out and allowed you to rename a file on the fly via the title bar.

So what you're saying is that within the app only the bare essentials should be available for managing a file, that every action for managing a file should be done via Finder and that the changes should be transparent. That makes sense.
Apr 26	comment	Renaming a file you are currently working in, why is this still not done? Save As is less dangerous because it only does half the job. A "delete previous copy" checkbox in the Save As dialogue near where the file name can be modified would amount to the same thing, although it would take a while for people to notice it.
