Why are progress bars horizontal? Chinese text is not "all vertical". Modern Chinese writing is left-to-right, with similar punctuation marks as English. |

Suggestion for a UX book +1 I like the philosophy of your answer, but "what you should really be doing is undertaking real-world usability tests with (ideally) a representative sample of actual users" -- that seems out of reach for a lot of people working on small projects or hobby projects. And even on larger projects, it's out of reach if a budget for UX wasn't set up before the project began... there has to be some low-cost way for people to get introduced to these principles and put them to work without explicitly doing human testing. |

Is there ever a good reason to force opening a new browser window? Except sometimes the server doesn't use the "inline" attribute, and the browser downloads the file and leaves an empty tab. I don't mind a PDF opening in the same window. |

Is it okay to open a help link in a new window? @Bevan I'm not so sure I agree that Facebook is an "application". It definitely feels like a site, to me, which complicates your thesis about apps and sites behaving differently. |
