What is the reasoning behind grayscale icons? The part that makes me furious (given Microsoft's latest announcement blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2012/02/23/…) is that this only works for certain types of user interfaces, particularly those that don't have a hundred buttons, tree views and panels all over the interface. When will UI designers start to realise this is just a very specific design metaphor and not some cool fad? Coloured icons work when there are many icons to be seen. |

Greater Than > or Plus + 8+ is more intuitive to me at a glance. >7 would be used in a mathematical context, but in a UI, I would use 8+ myself. |

Greater Than > or Plus + If you want to get technical, they each have different meanings anyway. >8 = greater than 8 8+ = greater than or equal to 8 |

Symbol for “Swipe Left” Apple's is a good way to approach it as it provides both a virtual object to manipulate and instructs the user on the action to take at the same time. |

Examples of placebos in UI design? I've never had a close button do anything, but the open button typically works. |

Show camera feature on iPhone when there is no camera? Oh yes! I forgot about iPod touches and iPads. My mistake. |

Show camera feature on iPhone when there is no camera? One question, when has there ever not been a camera on the iPhone? |

What are the negative and positive aspects of dark color scheme? +1 I've always loved the darker interface in Lightroom. Not only that, but in general if a light-on-dark interface is designed well, it can reduce glare over long periods of use. Pure white text on a dark background can make you squint, but light gray text is a lot easier on the eyes. |

Should I trim spaces in passwords? Or alternatively, require that passwords don't have spaces. Whitespace should be part of any "illegal characters". |

When displaying statistics to a user, is it better to bold the data or the label? For horizontal statistics, I find it better to bold the label, so that the user can easily find the statistic they are looking for, but for vertically centered like those pictured, it could be done either or. |

Usability and security for user access and password handling in a web application? With point #1, certain users may have no accounts in any of the supported systems, which is where a site-specific login may still be required for those users. As well, users may not be educated and think that logging in using Facebook will open up their account. P.S. You don't need valedictions and your name on answers as your account is right below it. |

Usability and security for user access and password handling in a web application? And from a security point of view, never save the password, only save the hash and hence require the user to reset their password when they forget it. |

In a desktop application, what are best practise methods to provide a menu of functions Well, the ToolStrip and ToolStripMenuItem and drop downs etc are basically just the standard Windows implementation and respond to mouse over/click accordingly. Shouldn't need to worry about any of that stuff, just the Control.Click. |

Should a toggle button show its current state or the state to which it will change? I hate these buttons. |

Better term for “user” Who is it for? Company staff? If so, you could use "staff". |

Where can I find an official or recommended Windows desktop application user interface usability and style guide? Agreed, though it's wise to adhere as much as possible to the guidelines to make your application appear seamless with the operating system's software and paradigms. |
