comment What does “end-user” mean?
"End user" is more descriptive of the level of interaction. "Audience" connotes a consumer, someone who just absorbs something (at least to me, anyway). The concept of "user" describes more the type of relationship an individual will have with your product or service.

comment Do unique icon contours help people scan?
The article author has (somewhat snidely) offered links to associated research in a comment. Why he didn't offer this in the main body (or as references) is anyone's guess.

I'd already re-stated the answer given above, but I'll also say that the same question has been asked here: stackoverflow.com/questions/637683/….

comment What are some best practices when doing testing to compare different design ideas?
Oops. Sorry. I didn't quite pick that up. One of the biggest problems with many variations is actually getting agreement. In my experience, different users have adapted their way of working to cope with the systems they know, and when you show them something new, they're trying to shoehorn their existing methods into your design. It rarely works. It's not always easy to get consensus.

comment How can I justify UX processes?
I think we can all appreciate the struggle. I suspect that, given the "newness" of UX as a concept in many larger organisations, we've all had similar experiences to some degree. I would highly recommend Cennydd Bowles' book "Undercover User Experience", though. It'll go a long way towards pointing you in the right direction.
