Thank you @Salman, I should have made that clear in my answer to begin with.

comment Responsive design on desktop
You have a very good point. As a user, if I resize a window slowly and see it change it is ok and I do not get confused. But if I visit the web site the first time with a very wide window and later visit the same web site with a narrow window and receive a totally different rendering, I would be very confused.

comment Isn't all user testing essentially a way of gathering how people think things should work?
I think the answer to your question of "Isn't all user testing essentially a way of gathering how people think things should work?" is YES. Building things that work exactly how a significant portion of potential users expect them to work is the goal of user testing.

I don't think that "gathering opinions or perceptions" is user testing, it is user interviewing. User testing is more along the lines of giving the user a task and observing how successful they are at completing that task. I ask them to think out loud so that I can have an idea of what they are thinking and where they are going, but I ignore any comments that are opinions, comments, or suggestions.

comment Input form label alignment top or left?
In the user testing that I recently completed there was no discernible difference between top and left alignment. Right alignment of labels was not tested. I chose to recommend top alignment to increase the room available for internationalization and to allow for more 'help' text that could go between the label and the input field.

comment Should I use a timer on a registration page to reserve seats?
I agree, display the countdown timer. I would suggest having the actual timeout be a second or three after the timer shows that time is up. I also suggest not relying on JavaScript pop-ups for messaging.
