@Erics indeed, which may be a case for making the file upload a second step in the process, as imgur does.

(I wouldn't recommend this as a pattern without some caveats.)

I find this control to be confusing - I screw it up frequently. The underlying pattern makes sense, but the graphic implementation is sooo bad. The "center-everything" layout is ragged in every way, it's not clear that "from my computer" isn't an action itself, and there is mix of three styles of button-looking elements that each do different things. For selecting the image input type tabs, iOS-style toggles, radio buttons, or vertical stacking would be better than a button bar.

I totally agree re: SO's pattern being confusing. I'm thrown for a loop quite often by the sequence of controls to press.

guiders.js is nifty!

...so toggles would be fine except that they don't have a neutral initial state.

+1 for responding to user confusion and the XKCD method. See my answer for more specifics on Microsoft's activation codes.

comment UI: Hover/focus to reveal controls?
Also, touch screens don't have hover. You'll need to provide a workaround.

Is Swedish tax law as horrendous as in the US? In our case, we started out hoping any or all of our users could manage these complex structures, but over time we have narrowed the management down to our employees and qualified super-user types. For typical end-users just consuming the structures, it's not as important that they understand the model, but it can still causes some confusion.
