full-color icons vs. greyed-out icons in menus I've noticed Express Blend seems to use color as a way of showing the selected tool in the tool bar. I thought it was a pretty slick way of emphasizing the selected tool and did not bring to mind whether it was enabled or not, perhaps because of the metro style icons that normally lack multiple colors, shades, or gradients. |

full-color icons vs. greyed-out icons in menus I like the idea of using relative size to indicate selection. For those still insisting on using raster images for icons though it can be a pain to implement though. |

Most User-Friendly Form Fields for Entering Date/Time? @Charles - I think the time picker looks nice but usability wise it may not be that great. Always hard to tell without touching it yourself. |

what is the best UI for multi select from a list I agree, and I think that's why most user interfaces allow for muddling about doing things one-at-a-time but then allow multi-selection as an advanced feature for those power users who care to learn advanced features. But in the case where multi-select is a necessity for all users then using check-boxes is probably the most reasonable solution. |

Alternatives to a dual list for selecting a bunch of items from a long list? @David - True, so the cases where it makes sense is where the selected values are already apparent usually on the parent form that launches such a dialog. Such is the case with Windows Explorer where you only have to look at the visible columns to know what is already selected. So I would say it's a trade off between having a more slim dialog with a single list and having the ability to easily see which values are selected and in some cases one way makes more sense than the other. |

Alternatives to a dual list for selecting a bunch of items from a long list? No, not in the example that I provided from Windows, in that case ordering also reflects column ordering in Windows Explorer. Good question though. |

Select item from a list to be added to another list I've seen this concept called, dual lists, accumulator, list builder, and LOV (list of values). Perhaps these terms may help you find more material on this UI pattern. |
