Is there ever a good reason to force opening a new browser window? @DA01: Doesn't the default behaviour for new tab handle that correctly? Is it similar to the previous comment - i.e. empty tab gets left behind? |

Search Icon vs Search Input Box - Both Require One Click/Touch: Which to use? "an icon takes up considerably less space" - this sounds rather worrying to me. If you're really concerned about the difference in space taken up by a search box versus. a search icon, I suspect the "iA and navigation hurdles" of which you speak are the ones to tackle first rather than worrying about this issue. |

What errors should users never experience? @Leon: totally agree. I was going to make that a much longer comment by talking about failovers (try saving the document somewhere else? try saving to a different filesystem / the cloud / etc?) but just went with the "quick example" for the sake of brevity ;-) There's definitely a crossover here with things like 'autosave' and other usability improvements that stop the user from having to understand how a computer works in order to fulfil their task. |

What errors should users never experience? I think Leon is trying to distinguish between an error and a message. If a document fails to save, you don't want the application to say "Error writing bytes to filesystem" or anything remotely technical. Instead, a clear message should be given, along the lines of "Your document could not be saved, please try again" (although even that's not great, just a quick example off the top of my head ...) |

Is it a good idea to have a large footer containing many links? @Chris That's really good advice, thanks very much. Do you have any references to back that up? I believe you 100% and it's common sense, but I might need to convince others! |
