I had an application like this, too. My users were using a system 40 hours a week basically - they preferred a more complicated UI which had easier access to information (and thus a higher cognitive load) than one which was more streamlined. It had a higher learning curve absolutely and could have been "prettier" or more streamlined from a UX perspective, but for the users who were using the system access to a lot more information at once was what they wanted.
