comment Can I interrupt search if user taps other navigation element?
True, but sensing if it is accidental click or desired click is very important. Prompting a message stating "are you sure" all the time is very annoying when it was a desired interruption. So it is important to profile the user behaviour with help of bounce rate. If user seraches and interrupts and goes to differnt page and immediately searches again for same entry and again interrupts; now it is safe to assume that this is an accidental click and so prompt for confirmation the second time and not thrfirst time.

As Michael Lai stated you can use "You can remove any stylistic embellishment (e.g. borders, shadows) to indicate a different state to other active UI elements"

comment eCommerce Payment Process
You may have to insist user further by showing a graphical-image scaring him what may happen if he goes "Back". The image has to match with the theme of your website. You can also use the "amount-payable-stats" to persuade further that he may lose it. Do not overdo it because you may give him a opinion that he losing money like "This transaction burns a hole in my pocket" Use the persuasion-emotion-trust at right ratio.

comment A possible way to make a page load immediately even on slow connections
@myth yes very true and that is why I added a point in the end to give user option to personalise such setting. If your project is ready to invest then start the activity of detailed user profiling.

comment Why hover colors are often inverted
Fade out is quiet a bad idea depending upon the horizontal real estate of list item. Even a simple movement in screen will perform fade in/out action. So user has to move his mouse pointer to neutral area every time to see all list items at a glance. This solution causes bigger problem than inverting colors.
