comment Yes/No radio buttons: Vertical or horizontal
I don't think this should be a standard because it really it comes down to the language of question itself. If the question could lead to confusion or ambiguity, fix the question, not the options.

comment Yes/No radio buttons: Vertical or horizontal
I'd be interested to see a study done on a vertical/horizontal layout specifically considering Fitt's law. In a horizontal layout - Is it slower to move your mouse a little to the right to click on 'No'? Probably. But in a vertical layout, do users accidentally click on one answer when they meant to click on the other because of the proximity? Does it take longer to home in on the correct choice because the two options are closely stacked vertically? Another thing to ask is, will this ever be put on a mobile device? And how will the decreased area affect the accuracy and speed?

comment Drop-Down List with two types of data? User choice of either
I love adding the 'tip' and then replacing it with what they've typed. I hadn't thought of that, thank you!

comment Drop-Down List with two types of data? User choice of either
Thank you, I was leaning toward the jQueryUI autocomplete comobox. I should have specified in my OP. jqueryui.com/autocomplete/#combobox. I like your suggestgions, though I will need to retain the ability to have the user type the number. It will be much quicker for the user to type 11234 than to start typing - then select widget-1-36-24-left-window out of a result set of dozens of similar widgets. I'm glad your instinct lined up with mine :)
