Chris, I am leaning toward option 3 since our target user is an it administrator. They type in IP addresses all the time. And if we can give instant, visual, validation feedback, I feel like it's not a bad option.

Those are really pretty sketches. There's no way I could accomplish something so legible without software unless I spent a LOT of time. Software is way quicker for me. I will at times resort to a whiteboard in order to communicate something to another person in less than 10 seconds.

I don't have any data to refer to, but my inclination is that what really matters is that 1) you are consistent and 2) the button (and/or cursor) changes enough to be noticeable.

This comment is completely tangential, but, you don't need to put radio buttons inside of a label tag in order to make the text trigger a state change. If you use the for attribute on a label and specify the radio button id attribute value, then it will do the same thing.
