I am a scripting language connoisseur, regular expression aficionado, network geek, general lover of Linux and a frequent contributor to open source software. I transitioned to programming from other work because I was too busy automating my own work environment to actually do the other work. I have a hobby interest in cartography. For more see my personal site. Most importantly, my life is defined by the grace of God given to men through Jesus Christ. It is my ambition that everything I do would reflect His glory and point people towards Him.

Display big numbers in a small area If you do use "k", please not that upper case is inappropriate for this. A lower case k is much more appropriate. |

“Tool” or “target” on vacuum cleaner pedal? Less terse, actually explain what these are. |

“Tool” or “target” on vacuum cleaner pedal? @Zano: See my full answer, but having brush (or more specifically, a beater bar) is actually more common for carpets than for smooth floors! |

When should a mobile app have only one orientation? Expanded with material from my own comments and further thought. Also taking into consideration objections raised. |

“Tool” or “target” on vacuum cleaner pedal? Great, except the brush mode is usually used on carpets (especially if the brush includes a beater bar) and the straight suction mode would need to be paired with flat floors. |

When should a mobile app have only one orientation? That may be true, but not every UX designer has the luxury of shipping their design on matching hardware. In the case of Android, in order to create a good user experience you must consider that your designs will be used on a wide range of screens including different resolutions, aspect ratios, and orientations. It's like the switch from print to web layout all over again, you don't design at the pixel level, you have to design things that will be flexible. To create a good user experience on Android you must put your effort into flexible designs that will play nice on diverse hardware. |
