Hi I'm Salman, UX Architect from Melbourne. I work for VETASSESS and design web-apps, mobile apps and websites for internal support. I have a blend of education part of which is computer sciences and rest is visual/user experience design.

I am here to learn from the experience of Seniors and the creative ideas of juniors and peers. and I would love to be part of discussions and UX design challenges.

comment Display Old value vs New value
Import is a verb itself. You don't need "Do" before that that.

comment How many clicks are too many?
you definitely don't want to click 20 times to a simple need like help. Number of clicks matter and that is why in the usability matrix, number of clicks is one assessment criteria to user experience.

comment Which gender should I write to
Hi Hamilton. Two thoughts here. Use of "he" may not "save" us as gender addressing issues were born when use of "he" the convention. Second, as a standard practice in South Asia where I am from and where English is taught as second language, it is common practice to use "she" whenever gender is unknown. BUT I agree use of "she" stands out odd, yet it is less "provocative" to gender conscious section and you are likely to receive less criticism than otherwise. So even though it reads odd, it is politically more accurate than "he".

comment Login/register: How to balance ease-of-use, number of clicks, and appearance?
Agreed. There should be buttons instead which lead to their respective verifier.

comment Forgiveness Enabled Dialog Pattern?
Yes mate I have seen that but it is hard to find a UX designer who is Fan of Microsoft because of its UX. There are few things wrong with this 3+1 dialogue 1)Overloaded with content 2) Difficult to visually scan and always demands attention 3)Dialogue has unreasonable option, like "don't copy" which is the same as "cancel" and you also have yet another [X] cross button on the top 4) "Copy but keep both files" is unasked for and would create data-redundancy and confusion in the long run.

comment Default action for the “Do you want to leave the page?” warning?
Auto-save usually happens periodically after every 30 seconds or so. If you leave a page before auto-save initiates, you will loose your content.

Two buttons is good because you know there is only one way forward which you can choose to continue over and you can continue with or without fixing the error. Simple. The mental model with 3 buttons is complex because you can cancel, but other than cancelling, you still have two ways to choose from and two paths create 1) confusion 2) burden to make a decision 3) fear of being wrong 4) keeps a thought running in your head that alternate also exists even when you are moving along one path. Two buttons give impression that you are only going along one path and reaching closer to your goals.

comment Forcing users to use a new password everytime they reset
This is exactly where I am asking that user should be allowed to use one of his old passwords and among among old passwords list, he may try to use the same password which he had used last time (and forgot). By doing that, we do not compromise on security aspects.

comment Forcing users to use a new password everytime they reset
There are three scenarios here. (1) Catastrophic (happens once in years): justifies password must be different from old one - agreed. (2) Account Hacked (may happen couple of times a year): justifies password must be different - agreed (3) I forgot my password: now this is where user should be dealt politely and shouldn't be forced to create a new password.

comment Is an “in-page survey” a good way of retrieving useful users opinions?
Your question is too broad and you are rather asking will it help your business or not. If you could narrow your question down to single specific question then you will be able to get useful response on that. Otherwise its a matter of general opinion instead of professional advice.

comment Best way to divvy up screen space in pictorial article mobile app?
We may have different understanding about your product defination but the way I understood, it is an app which lets you browse image heavy articles. If this is the case, I would want content to be seen as article with images - even though images are more accessible than standard article. With this definition in view, text, the article itself comes first. You can choose to show only 3,4 lines of text and remaining text can be loaded on demand. REGARDING DISPLAYING IMAGES, yes they can be opened in overlay window with option to go forward, back and close(back) to article + images view.

comment Is it a good/acceptable practice to combine checkboxes with radio buttons for one question?
This is not a Valid Question to begin with. You don't put check-boxes and ratio buttons in the answer. You could use two separate questions for each and if answer was "yes" for first answer, you ask the other depending upon that. Have a look at some properties of Question which make it valid or invalid. wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_valid_question

This works for Text Areas which are nevertheless re-sizable.

comment Effect on usability if I use green and red colors (for meaning) in an app whose color scheme does not include those colors?
Border around the CANCEL button was to highlight use of color whenever possible. If you take critically, "I AGREE" button doesn't make any sense in this context either :). I have focused on the colors issue which is asked in the question.

Yup everything is taken from the given color-pallet above EXCEPT that I have applied some transparency to one of the colors to achieve background colors. I am attaching its PSD for your reference.

comment Difference in Button Placement in Gmail Inbox and Spam Folders = Bad UX?
I agree with you, Delete Forever and Delete buttons should've kept their relative positions. GMAIL is probably using "most frequently used button first" model but swapping their positions is confusing.

comment Visualizing structure and intermediate results of a computation
Your question is pretty generic which will pull generic answers and those will not help you much. If you could share some wire-frames of existing solution then weak areas can be easily identified and improved.

comment Differentiate between exact date and date period (e.g., month vs. month of year)
I am sorry I am not able to learn what is difference between MONTH and MONTH OF A YEAR. (Does month means this month only and MONTH OF A YEAR can be any month?) This is probably technical and requires explanation of your scenario and how these two 'months' differ. BUT if I am not getting it right, it is likely others may not get it either. If I could add, 1) Day 2) Week 3) Month 4)Quarter 5) Year and don't have "month of year" and "week of year" then this would help.

comment Handle Facebook Connect and regular registration form (merge account)
Hi Maxwell, I am finding your post is more about data integration instead of user experience, even though it may have a bit related to UX. For the UX part, I presume you can connect both accounts quietly without even notifying user. That means next time they login using their email or facebook account, they are taken to SAME account. This is how facebook links multiple logins and you are able to use two different emails but both take you to same account.
