comment Image Search results: to crop or not to crop?
Do you have the possibility to ask image uploader users to define themselves the cropped area? When talking about cropping, one recurrent problem is "does my crop can break the picture sense and/or representation?" - chopped head portrait, focusing point out of central square, ... If you can only crop by taking the center part of the picture, and if the nature of this pictures is quite random, this could be a problem.

for additional information and/or actions, check pinterest.com, their way seems quite nice to me: the position of the supplementary details is irregular through an absolute grid, but is always at the same place when you're focusing on one picture. My point there is: the caveat you mention is not necessarily one.

comment Guidelines for making the active tab selectable?
To complete Jimmy comment, I find the way ux.stackexchange doing it kind of clever. The active tab is not highlighted, it's shaded so the user doesn't have really the sensation of the tab being selected.

comment Hierarchical/flat comment system
I'm just curious, how does your upvoting system work in hierarchic comments? If you want to put on top the best comments, don't you have a problem with hierarchy? Or if you prefer to highlight best comments (with color by example), won't you have a problem with your hierarchy color scheme? Also, do you really need hierarchy?
