comment How would you have avoided the Miss Universe 2015 mistake?
@kasperd I think that pattern is an artifact of how it's a picture of a picture (the fingers at the top also show the pattern)

comment Do signs printed on the road offer a significant advantage for the user over signs on a post?
@plainclothes to install the road paint you need to block off the road and wait for the paint to dry before you can open it again. With a sign it's just a single guy with a screwdriver.

comment Why do speedometers (in the US, at least) go so high?
speedometers in most jurisdiction must indicate between the true speed and speed+10% + 4kmh (EU regulation) that's 15kmh margin at 120kmh

comment Why are calculator screen digits right-aligned?
and the technical consideration is that you save the repositioning circuits, units can only appear in one spot when right aligned while they could appear anywhere in a left aligned display.

comment Which user input validation approach is better: preventing or explaining?

comment Check off the boxes you wish to unsubscribe from
any other phrasing, this one is made to be ambiguous so the bean counters can say "look at how many newsletters we are sending" of all the accidental subscriptions

comment Is it good idea to send user password upon register?
@DannyVarod but an archived mailbox will include the password allowing the attacker to log in without needing real-time access to the mailbox (which resets require)

comment Why do traffic lights have three separate light bulbs instead of having one?
In Belgium the law explicitly (Dutch link) states that the light have to be 3 colored and red has to be on top and green at the bottom. Thus to change the lights they'd first have to change the law.
