comment How to measure Learnability?
You could, perhaps take the variables into account and instead of looking at time in seconds, find the percentage faster a user can do things. For working on a live site using analytics, I'd not look at how long it takes them to do multiple tasks, but instead look at each task as it's own metric (as some users may stop after 2 tasks)

comment Is a lightbox considered a dialog box?
This might sound glib (and I don't mean it to, but that's why i've made it a comment not an answer), but I feel like a lightbox is a tool. It can be used for a dialog box, in which case I'd call it that, it can also be used for other purposes... and when used for other things, I'd call it by that name.

comment How do I figure out what people need by observing?
And if you have more assignments like this in the future just think "In my regular life, where do I get frustrated" and go from there :D

After watching them, then figure out pain points: did anyone have odd questions for baristas at starbucks? Were people confused which subway stop to take? How did the cashiers at the grocery store handle produce that wasn't labeled?

I can't complain about the answer, it was quite awesome, and some of those links are still relevant when dealing with clients who might not understand why they should pay for us to do a comprehensive strategy for them.

Whoops, got distracted while writing the edit: This is a great post! I'm going to use some of this as I move forward, but the main thrust of the question is more along the lines of selling UX and strategy to other companies. I think internally, there's some buy-in to doing things for our projects.

comment How to make a text look “clickable” in mobile applications?
The way it is in the screenshot WORKS, doesn't mean it's optimal. The web convention gets the job done, but at that point it's always going to feel like a webapp shoe-horned onto a mobile device. Usability-wise the blue links will be fine, but your app will lose some of that mobile shine ;)

comment Collecting testing recruits without using a recruiting firm
So, in your experience, are those three better than maybe compiling a list that you can go back to?
