@James I understand we're speculating on historical reasons, but even systems in the early 80's could draw vertical and horizontal lines with no perceived difference in speed. Common line drawing algorithms like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bresenham's_line_algorithm work for lines at arbitrary slope and quite efficiently at that.

It is simply untrue that it's faster to draw a horizontal line than a vertical one in a raster graphics system. Additionally, any high-level drawing code is abstracted enough that the code is almost identical. You'd just swap coordinates in a call to a line function that takes x1, y1, x2, and y2 parameters.
