What should a System Icon look like? It probably doesn't matter too much what it is as long as it's used consistently throughout. |

Why do websites not use entire width of browser? Personally I believe this to be the most important reason. Technology can change as much as it likes to, but our eyes and brains won't for a very, very long time. Sure, there are instances when a website or app can make great use of a 27" widescreen display, but more often than not, that's not the case. It's commonly accepted that the "ideal" measure (the length of a line) for a single column of text is around 65 characters. With default settings in Chrome the measure of these answers seems to be just over 100 characters, so already past the ideal range of 50-80. |

Placement of a Change language button Automatic language detection should never rule out the possibility of a user wanting to view a page in a language that is different from the one set by their OS. I live in Switzerland where there are 4 official languages. How would identifying that I'm visiting your website from Switzerland help you make a decision on which language I understand? What's more, none of those languages are my preferred language, which is English. Personally, I find being being served a language based on my geographical location very frustrating. I'm looking at you, Google. |

Is it absolutely necessary to show the currently selected language in a language selector? I'm showing them side by side as DE FR IT (at least on mobile) with enough space around them to make it easy to select the one you want. |

Is it absolutely necessary to show the currently selected language in a language selector? Although this ins't really an answer to my question, what you say is true. However, note that I said ''page'' and not website. |

Contact form or mailto: link? While the email client may be an app on a smartphone, it doesn't guarantee that it has been configured. I was pretty surprised to find out that a work colleague does not have Mail on his iPhone configured, because he uses Gmail. I think it's likely that a lot, if not most users don't use their phone's default email client. |

What are some alternative design patterns I can use in this case? @Peter it's an update of a legacy Flash app (you know the ones where you can flip through PDFs) and the client wants to keep it as close as possible to that... but with variable copy length :/ I guess once we build this and they can see the problem they might change their mind. |
