comment Best way to select a subset of items in a long list
Sounds valid. Perhaps leaving the order as alpha is better then, because it doesn't scare the user as much (is predictable). My solution was intended to provide a little future proofing too - for a initial list longer than 150 items. My suggestion included not having all 150 items in the left hand list which would make a user trying to skip the search filtering, and trying to alpha browse the list impossible - they'd get to the "C" section then run out.

comment Is it better to prevent a forbidden action or display an error/explanation message?
I'm unsure if this applies. Perhaps this is not an "error state" we're taking about here, even tho the asker uses the "error message" as an option to communicate to the user that the action is not available. It's like a message or "warning state". I don't think it's an error or exception, to which i believe your quote more applies. As in Joel's answer, the "careful design" is to keep the "message/error" happening. Hope that's clear.

@peterchen Awesome question. In my humble opinion (and I know a lot of traditionally educated design ppl might not agree), we can learn from the iPhone and Apple a lot here - the key is about making reasonable assumptions that eventuate in decisions made for the user. No one really knew how PageRank worked initially but we didn't need to think about whether it was relevant simply because it was, and the results worked. In this case I think "most recently used" and "most popular" could combine fairly simply to produce what the user wants. Sure test and tweak it, but it's a good start right?

@Rahul Maybe you're right. I simply didn't think references were needed here.

comment Alternatives to a dual list for selecting a bunch of items from a long list?
The filtering is probably the easiest that will have the greatest effect. Convention these days accepts a 'Google Suggest' style filtered list (where simply typing letters reduces the item count). Your users already know how to use something like this. +1 again for "finding the correct values" - relevance! Try to sort the list initially with things that make the items at the top most relevant. I've got more to say but it's just reiterating this great answer.

comment How do you know when an interface is complete?
Totally agree (see comment above). The ability to change in an instant is hugely powerful in the web market.

I think it's important to mention that interfaces should never get comfortable either. You need to be able to change. There might be externals that may mandate changes in a UI long after the "goals are met" and the users are happy. But i do generally agree with the "when there is nothing left to remove" idea. Halve then halve again.

@JeromeR: Wow! This looks like a lot of overkill for a small UI decision. Perhaps something like this or AB/analytics testing would be more appropriate for a larger value item/decision. But surely not for this question?

@Rahul: I thought i did - "simple". I could probably find links to sites that do it like this but i really can't be bothered. Does it look ok to you? If so, then perhaps it's ok. If not then maybe it's not right for you. This is more my opinion than research-supported assertion.

.. joe.smith@example.com >> joe.smith's account | log out seems ok too so i think this is acceptable. Also, i've seen it used exactly like this before on other sites. So i'm not the only one.

@DomoDomo: Great idea with the email-only sign up option. Simply grad everything before the @ symbol. So for joe@example.com the UI could be joe's account | log out
