comment How can I improve this simple form?
If it's only 2 options (ascending/descending) then using radios is a good option too. Checkbox doesn't make clear that the alternative to ascending is descending. I'd also avoid to use acronyms (and alternatives to make it clear, like A-Z vs. Z-A).

comment Adding paging, sorting and filtering toolbars to a table
Great, IMHO makes it a bit easier. Maybe build one version, observe users and figure out how often they use filters. If using filters is the main case I'd make the more visible and easier accessible by default.

An even more interesting in combination with sign up/sign in etc. - see ux.stackexchange.com/questions/20595/…

Who is going to use this? Potentially 'everybody' or is it more a group of users that will use this more frequently, maybe in combination with a dedicated user account? If it's the latter one then this will give you some more options.

comment Complicated date field with range option
Just a thought about a potential pitfall for 'other requirements' that came to my mind: If date is optional and some entries do have a date, some a range and some no date, how does this impact the filter/order by date feature?

@gerrit Sorry. I was so focused on getting the cédille right that I messed up the word itself :-)
