@Charles Boyung You're right - I chose an outdated example. But I still think that designing an interface so it matches some UI artifact (familiar to majority of users!) makes it easier to learn.

@Charles Boyung What's better for the users - an MP3 player looking like a regular CD player (unique UI, e.g. Winamp cdn.avinashtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/winamp-2.JPG) or an MP3 player looking like Notepad (UI consistent with the OS, e.g. early foobar2000 nic.fi/~lhahne/temp/foobar.png)? Which design helps them to learn how to use the application? That is, in my opinion, the purpose of a unique UI - less steep learning curve for the users.

@Charles Boyung I like Winamp's UI because it mimics the look of a CD player - the icons instead of buttons with words Play, Pause, etc; the buttons with green LED-like indicators instead of checkboxes; seven-segment display instead of a label. However, I know this is very subjective.

@Charles Boyung The UI should have a unique look when it serves some purpose and therefore it helps users - good example: Winamp 2.x cdn.avinashtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/winamp-2.JPG (I've stopped using Winamp years ago, so I have no idea how it looks now).

I agree, they really have been overused; especially in various hardware/drivers related utilities like, for example, Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager img244.imageshack.us/img244/8080/realtekmanagersc5.jpg.
