Often colors (including black) pack emotional association for users, which is why I've seen users react to colorful / bold-colored UIs more so than 'light' and 'white' UIs. While white also has meaning, but users just see it everywhere and are often used it it.

To me this seems like an intimidating interface. Would be fine if it was part of a workflow where users are trained, but overwhelming to a new user. Just my thought.

another ++ for "You don't have to be afraid of blank pages." I think large blank space is often visually jarring because we're not accustomed to it. Better that than unnecessary / confusing content. Less is more!
