comment Do screen readers for blind people require content to be put in `<li>` to be usable?
Just came across css-tricks.com/navigation-in-lists-to-be-or-not-to-be (thanks @Pete) -- interesting read.

Indeed, but shouldn't screen readers be smart enough to recognize a group of links, especially if they're enhanced by semantic tags? Ie. <nav><a>Link 1</a><a>Link 2</a><a>Link 3</a></nav>

I understand that, but I was under the impression that screen readers allowed people to understand and traverse content regardless of whether or not the content was organized into lists?

In what way does it help? I'm all for using lists for actual bulleted or numbered lists -- I do not, however, understand why people has to use lists to divide any collection or group of items when they can just use <div>, or better, nothing at all. Please see the SO link in the updated question for more.
